SAE 8620 is a general purpose low alloy carburising steel containing small additions of nickel, chromium and molybdenum. It is one of the most widely used case hardening grades because it offers a good balance of core strength, toughness and machinability at moderate cost. After carburising and hardening it gives a case hardness of roughly 58-62 HRC with a tough core of about 30-40 HRC, and it responds well to carbonitriding. It is readily machined and cold formed in the annealed condition and has good weldability for a low alloy steel. Steel type: case hardening (carburising) low alloy steel.
